Meg 2: The Trench sees the return of Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor, who this time faces a growing attack of underwater terror, which includes more than one Megalodon along with a giant squid.
The film Meg 2: The Trench takes inspiration from the Meg or Megalodon, which was the largest shark ever, estimated to have weighed 50 tons and been over 60 feet long, making it about three times larger than today's great white sharks. They lived between 23 and 3.6 million years ago.
Ben Wheatley will direct the new film alongside Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis, alongside franchise newcomers Wu Jing, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, and Sienna Guillory.
This film is based on the 1999 novel entitled "The Trench" by Steve Alten which is a sequel to the film The Meg which was released in 2018. Meg 2: The Trench premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 9 2023.

Synopsis of Meg 2: The Trench
This film continues the adventures of Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and his friends who again encounter the ancient megalodon shark.
The Megalodon shark was very large and could even beat dinosaurs. Jonas and the researchers returned to dive into the Mariana Trench to face the threat of the very ferocious and mysterious Megalodon shark.

Plans for a sequel were announced as early in development in October 2018 following the box office success of the first film, Wheatley replaced Jon Turteltaub to direct from a script returned by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, with Alten completing the screenplay.
DNEG, Scanline VFX, and Milk VFX provided the visual effects for the sequel (with DNEG also handling the 3D conversion). Pete Bebb and Gavin Round served as production visual effects supervisor and production visual effects producer, respectively.
