Amidst days of relentless rainfall, the early days of July bore witness to the inundation of more than a dozen rivers in Vermont, triggering catastrophic flooding. These once-considered 1-in-100-year flood events are projected to occur with greater frequency due to the warming effects of climate change on the region. This phenomenon arises from the fact that warmer air possesses an increased capacity to hold moisture.

Fortunately, my hometown of Burlington managed to escape the brunt of this calamity. However, Lake Champlain, which runs adjacent to the city, bore the impact. As the waters of the Winooski River — a 145-kilometer watercourse that inundated the state capital, Montpelier — merged with the lake near my residence, it carried with it a load of debris, gasoline, and pollutants.

During a bike ride along the lake's shore shortly after the flooding's peak, I bore witness to this pollution. The lake's southern expanse, where we commenced our journey, retained its pristine appearance, radiating a light blue hue. However, as we pedaled northward, nearing the point where the river meets the lake, the water's clarity gave way to a murky brown.

This transition in color evoked a memory of my recent reading about deep-sea divers in Estero Salado, a fishing hamlet in the Dominican Republic. These divers employ a diverse color vocabulary to describe the shifting hues of the ocean waters they navigate.
